In our last post, HoistCam shared with you some of the details of new OSHA regulations which are expected to be put in place sometime between early 2016 and the end of 2017. According to a new survey posted by Engineering News-Record, there is some concern that crane operators may not be ready for the 2017 OSHA Certification Compliance.

In September of 2014, OSHA added a final rule to its certification requirement which caused the order to be delayed for up to three years. At that time, OSHA had a draft in place which gave guidelines as to what would be expected for this certification. However, an agency official recently informed stakeholders that the crane operator qualifications rule that is forthcoming from OSHA will be different that the previously issued draft.

In June of 2013, a Canadian Grand Prix marshal was killed at the end of a Formula One race, when he was ran over by a mobile crane. Crane Accidents shares, “The International Automobile Federation (FIA) released a statement saying the marshal, a member of the Notre Dame Automobile Club, had died in a Montreal hospital from the injuries he sustained. The marshal died while removing the Sauber of Esteban Gutierrez, who crashed out on lap 63.

There are many circumstances where innocent bystanders are injured during a crane accident. One such incident occurred in Seattle, Washington, when a crane knocked a large road sign into a bus full of passengers. Eight people were injured in the accident which involved a large boom crawler, according to Crane Accidents.

Changes are constantly happening in our industry. New federal regulations and ASME standards are written, safety gear is modified and tools of our trade are continually updated. However you can stay on top of the crane and lifting world by spending a valuable time at our 2015 Lifting and Load Handling Training Expo in Las Vegas area during a 4-day, feature rich event being held on November 16-19.

Qclad Pty Ltd had a large project which included placing over 15,000m2 of insulated roof panels...with an all terrain crane. Such a job would include many blind lifts. In fact, placement of each of these panels would have been in an area where the crane operator could not see.

HoistCam is a rugged, wireless and rapidly deployable camera system for cranes and heavy equipment. Although dropping HoistCam from 5 floors is not the intended use of HoistCam, we thought we would do a drop test to help demonstrate the durability of HoistCam in the field. Although many aspects of the crane and rigging industry have improved a great deal over the last few decades, there are still major problems which need to be addressed. One of these issues is the communication between riggers and crane operators. The rigger, or signal person, is responsible for getting the correct messages to the crane operator to let him know that all is clear below.

Job safety. For those working on job sites where large cranes and various types of heavy equipment and machinery is being used, these two words may become monotonous. This is because job safety is the first concern on job sites such as these. It is preached, printed, repeated, and repeated again in safety manuals, meetings, and on the job almost every day. Job safety is an absolute requirement for those who work on these sites.

One of the most important concerns on any type of job site is safety. Of course, anytime that heavy equipment is being used on a job site, there is an increased risk of injury to the people in the area, and a greater chance of damages to property. One of the most effective ways to handle this problem is to verify that the area within the crane’s lift is completely clear of any obstructions and personnel.

Situational awareness is defined by Wikipedia as, “the perception of environmental elements with respect to time or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status after some variable has changed, such as time, or some other variable, such as a predetermined event.

As we’ve already mentioned in our last article, there are many benefits to placing cameras on cranes. These cameras make it possible for the crane operator to see in places that were considered blind spots before. As you can imagine, lifting and moving loads which weigh several hundred pounds can be extremely dangerous in the best conditions.

While the crane operator has an eagle’s view of the job site, unfortunately, there are blind spots in his line of site which can be very dangerous for him and those working around him. Just as a blind spot can be dangerous for both a truck driver and the traffic around him, the same is true of blind spots for crane operators. From far above the job site, the crane operator can see the entire area below, but he ironically cannot see many of the areas from which he must lift.
