Garney Construction piloted HoistCam to solve the risks of operating cranes in the blind. Without clear visibility, operators face safety hazards that put people and productivity at risk. This case study shows how HoistCam helped reduce those risks, improve efficiency, and protect the crew on site.

The HoistCam has proved to be a valuable piece of kit on this site due to the fact that space is so limited and the buildings have a complex shape with a restricted view for Tower Crane operators. It has given our crane operators clear vision of the blind loads being slung, thus enhancing site safety.
- Alex Clements, VINCI Construction UK
“We have zero incidents since installing and using our series of HoistCam crane cameras"
- Electrical Planner, US Steel Company
He [the crane operator] can see where everyone’s at or where everything is located within his blind spot, so he’s not operating the crane with someone in harm’s way.
- Neil Eddington, CJ Mahan Construction
The use of the HoistCam allowed us to speed up the installation time of the roof, which allowed the builder to get follow-on trades in quicker, accelerating the overall program. The HoistCam acted as a set of eyes from above for the crane operator. This gave him and the rigging crew a greater scene of comfort due to being able to see where the load was in relation to the crew. It’s this higher level of safety which really was invaluable.

ABOUT HOISTCAM
SAFETY YOU CAN SEE
HoistCam is a rugged, rapidly deployable camera system that gives heavy equipment operators critical visual access to blind spots - enhancing precision, productivity, and safety. Designed for construction, maritime, industrial, energy, and other applications, HoistCam eliminates the guesswork in complex operations by streaming real-time video from the load or equipment directly to the operator’s cab.
With over a decade of innovation and deployment across North America, HoistCam empowers organizations to improve situational awareness, reduce operational risk, and complete lifts with confidence. Our wireless, magnetically mounted systems install in minutes and are built to withstand the toughest environments, delivering value from day one.
TOWERING PRODUCTIVITY
VINCI Construction UK built the Polden Student Accommodation Development on the university’s primary campus where space was severely restricted making lifting of loads extremely difficult for operators of tower cranes. Read how HoistCam helped them break through their challenges.
STEELED FOR SAFETY
Every steel producer strives to meet the demands of its customers for high quality. Without the proper operator aids, they can often be left in the blind, often leading to damages in the product, environment, and worse yet, their team members. Read this AIST case study article on how HoistCam helps to eliminate these damages from ever happening.

COMMUNICATION BEYOND WORDS
Visibility is the biggest challenge on a construction site. For C.J. Mahan, the operator needed to see where the crane tires are tracking while he moves with a load around a structure that’s blocking his visibility. Before choosing HoistCam, C.J. Mahan crews communicated via radio. Learn how HoistCam helped them take this to the next level.

CASCADING SPEED AND VALUE
QClad Pty Ltd had over 15,000 square meters of insulated roof panels to install with an all terrain crane, with the operator often having to perform blind lifts. These blind lifts increase time, increase costs, raises the chance of damages, and in some cases even increase the risk of injury. HoistCam helped to avoid challenges and added value to the other trades on the job site.

OUR STORY
HOW HOISTCAM GOT STARTED
Turning “You Can’t See That” into “Watch This”
Great ideas rarely come solely from boardrooms. Often, all it takes is a whiteboard, Wi-Fi, and enough caffeine to push past doubt.
HoistCam’s story began in 2012, when its founder set out to build smart cameras for operators who couldn’t see what was happening 100 feet above them on a crane. The concept didn’t launch with a flashy pitch deck or a polished five-year plan, it emerged as a spin-off from an earlier project called TugCam. The name raised eyebrows, but the technology worked.
Our young company took root inside Hatch, a small business incubator in Norfolk, Virginia, surrounded by a community that believed ambitious ideas could succeed even when early prototypes relied on duct tape and optimism. Customer discovery sessions with construction teams, many still recovering from the 2008 downturn, revealed a common insight:
“We survived because we kept building while others froze.”
These conversations shaped HoistCam’s blueprint. The company embraced the same grit shown by its customers, tough, practical professionals who invented roles like “virtual construction coordinator” to stay productive when budgets were tight.
Resourcefulness became HoistCam’s hallmark. Early camera prototypes were held together with zip ties and steadfast determination that looked like:
Our founder bootstrapped, hacked, and pitched nonstop.
Meals often consisted of ramen noodles and eggs.
One live demo featured a camera mount secured with electrical tape, and it performed flawlessly.
Daytime hours went to talking with customers; nights were spent assembling new camera systems. HoistCam discovered innovation rarely starts in climate-controlled strategy rooms with catered lunches. It often grows in dusty workshops where real problems demand practical solutions, and where pressure eases because the spotlight is elsewhere.
We found that economic downturns can be powerful incubators:
They grant freedom to explore, experiment, and iterate.
They reward businesses that listen closely to frontline needs.
That mindset turned a modest, caffeine-fueled idea into HoistCam, a resilient company committed to providing equipment operators with the industry's best solutions for the vision they need, wherever the job takes them.
